To understand why I’m so passionate about translation, you have to know a little about how I grew up. In Italy, there are more than 30 spoken dialects.

I was born in raised on the outskirts of the metropolis of Naples. So, my first two languages were Italian and Neapolitan.

Italian is like the “lingua franca” of the country. When a Southerner speaks to a Northerner, they can reach common ground in Italian. But in my region, Neapolitan is the language of the people. It’s what you hear on the bustling streets of the city and in its surrounding towns.

However, travel 30 miles outside of the city center and you’ll hear an entirely different dialect, unique from both Italian and Neapolitan!

Growing up in a multi-generational home, there were 3 languages being spoken, since my nonna was from a town in the mountains. This is a common experience for many Italians.

This is all to say, if you want to appeal to the Italian market, you have to understand not just their Italian heritage, but their regional heritage. I dedicated my university years to studying the intricacies and dynamics of European culture and adding to my repertoire of languages. I am fluent in Neapolitan, Italian, Spanish, English and am proficient in French.
